TRANSFORM LIVES IMPACT

One school at a time! Several renovated schools in Alwar district, Rajasthan, are testimony to the transformation being done under the Transform Lives one school at a time initiative. The Indragarh school in Alwar, Rajasthan, with a smart classroom in the shape of an airplane, continues to gain a lot of attraction. The smart classroom was recently inaugurated by the state labor minister, Mr. Teekaram Juli. The Sehgal Foundation team organized a Vikas Sammelan (development conclave) where  digital literacy students shared their learning.

Ambassador Quinn to receive international award for confronting genocide

Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn, the president of the World Food Prize Foundation and a former US Foreign Service officer, will be honored on March 5 in the House of Lords, London, for his efforts throughout 25 years of diplomatic service to confront and eventually eradicate the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime in Cambodia. The regime took the lives of 1.7 million Cambodians out of a population of seven million. Sehgal Foundation congratulates Ambassador Quinn on this well-deserved recognition!

LATEST AT SEHGAL FOUNDATION

Innovative drinking water technology recognized
Sehgal Foundation’s rural drinking water technology, JalKalp water filter, has been recognized by Aarohan Social Innovation Awards by Infosys Foundation, and also with a Water Digest Award supported by the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India. Sehgal Foundation innovator, Lalit Sharma, presented information about JalKalp to the Aarohan Awards jury in Bangalore in January. On February 29, the Sehgal Foundation team received the Water Digest Water Award (for providing rural drinking water solutions) in an award ceremony presided by key government officials in New Delhi.

Taruni certificate distribution 
Sehgal Foundation has been effectively running life skills education centers, named Taruni, in intervention areas in Anantpur, Andhra Pradesh. The centers have instilled a sense of confidence and self-worth in the participants. Two examples of this success are Ms. Kavitha and Ms. Manjula who recently took their oaths as sarpanch (village head) and as ward member respectively. With zeal and enthusiasm in their new roles, they are sharing their plans for village development. We wish them strength and success!

Strengthening the childhood journey through radio! 
Community radio Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8 is presenting a radio series, Bachpan (childhood) Express to create awareness about child marriage and continuing education under a project by UNICEF India and Community Radio Association (CRA). Aired weekly, the program covers the causes and effects of child marriage and the importance of education. 

Farmer conclaves in Nuh and Alwar
Kisan sammelans (farmer conclaves) were held in February in districts Nuh and Alwar under Sehgal Foundation partnership projects titled Gram Uday and Krishi Jyoti. These sammelans brought the farming community together to share their learnings and experiences. About 1,000 farmers were reached through these events, and information education and communication materials were distributed among them. Held in partnership with Mosaic Company, the sammelan held in Ramgarh block, Alwar, Rajasthan, on February 26 saw participation from over 350 farmers from 75 villages. Dr. Robin Edwin, MD, Mosaic India, and Dr. Shashikant Bhende, Country Agronomist, addressed the gathering and recognized the progressive farmers. From Sehgal Foundation, Ms. Anjali Makhija, COO, shared that women should also be recognized as farmers and engage in agricultural decision-making.

Biosand filter training
Sehgal Foundation, in partnership with Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST), organized a practitioner’s training on JalKalp Biosand Filter Technology in Hyderabad on February 20–22, 2019. The workshop on safe drinking water gave practitioners from eight states an opportunity to learn about a sustainable solution for treating water.

Haryana Education Forum encourages more fun learning
Experts emphasized the value of fun learning in education at the Haryana Education Forum meeting held in Faridabad on February 27. The Forum was an initiative of Sehgal Foundation to bring various stakeholders to one platform to discuss good practices and innovations in education and suggest improvements. This year's Forum was held in partnership with Lady Bamford Charitable Trust, a CSR initiative of JCB Ltd. Dr. G Anupama, divisional commissioner, Faridabad, emphasized the need for civil society to address the resignation of communities in Nuh, including the state of education and filling the gap between government and communities. Event participants included teaching staff of many government schools and members of school management committees.

Women’s empowerment events in Alwar and Azamgarh

Sehgal Foundation organized two more mega community events in districts Alwar, Rajasthan, and Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, on the theme of women’s empowerment. The event also celebrated the television serial, Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon, which is about women’s empowerment and sanitation. Both events presented a cultural bouquet of performances and formally recognized grassroots changemakers for their outstanding work. Veteran actress, Shabana Azmi from Azamgarh, graced the occasion as chief guest and gave a moving speech to stop gender-based discrimination and support girl child education. Overall, these community events reached out to more than 15,000 women in four districts across four states.
